TV
with a PC OS
---------------------
Sony's
TV division is losing money and has fewer sales as compared to their
competitors. I have a Sony's TV by the way [somehow I like products developed
by Japanese], because I didn't need lots of features on a TV such as surfing
the Internet using TV [all I looked for was to compare pictures and colors of
all available TVs at a store display, i.e. Future Shop/Best Buy/WalMart]. The
Internet surfing does not work on my TV, but pre-loaded ones such as YouTube
were fine.
I liked the pictures/colors, which are better than their competitors, but it
was sold at higher prices [I bought mine at a special sale]. The competitor
models added more features to their TV as I heard from others and sold at lower
prices.
I guess, Sony developed everything including software on their TV -->
expensive for development and testing. Even the portable WiFi adapter was
proprietary and sold at $100, while others for computers were sold at around
$30 in store.
I think, if they integrated other products like Windows OS on their platform
for Internet stuff, it should be less expensive and let Microsoft worry about
those, because Internet is bread and butter for Microsoft. There are also many
third party software or products developed on Windows OS for use. They just
focus on TV stuff, e.g. display on screen, quality of pictures, etc. I really
like a wireless keyboard and mouse connected to a TV if Internet surfing is
offered on a TV, i.e. I don't like using a TV remote control to type. Currently
there are many USB wireless keyboard and mouse sold in the market at low
prices.
--> It does not mean they only use Microsoft OS in the TV. They could use
Microsoft OS to communicate with other Internet apps out there, pass info to
their software or proprietary OS to display or further processing. There are
tons of Internet applications available, and somehow Microsoft have to support
those --> otherwise users won't buy Windows OS.
Touch screen TV would not work, unless it is a fashion. Nobody would be
comfortable to stay close to a large TV screen, and select items. Btw, I don't
like any touch screen devices including smart phones --> screen looks dirty
with oil and dirt after a while. I still prefer a laptop. Hopefully the thinner
laptop would fall within my budget range one day.
FYI: developing everything from scratch would take longer time and expertise
[expensive] -> quantity sold must be high to compensate higher cost of
development. Windows OS installed on a computer is sold at lower price, because
they sold hundreds of millions copies worldwide. I recalled the early version
of Windows OS was sold at around $550 - now a better Windows OS was sold at
around $150 due to higher sale volumes [special sale may be at $100].
* Notes: I read an article about licensing Windows OS on a smart phone. It said
that manufactures would pay around $20 - $30 per each smart phone sold.
Probably this was the cost to pay for licensing Windows OS on special devices
or equipment -> I don't know.
